Chop-chop chop

airplane.gif

Hard to believe, but as we surveyed the top of our little guy's head this past week, we came to the conclusion that a haircut was in order. While some moms have the cutting confidence to take shears into their own hands, we decided to go a more conventional route and visit a specialist.

cal_hair.gifCalvin was enchanted with the elevated experience of taking the pilot's seat. And after a few snips here and there, a little pint-sized product application (witness the temporary mohawk), and a final blow dry and we were done.

You can see the final result below -- and we can't get over at how the new hairdo makes our baby look like a little boy!

ONEderful

Cal_0m.gifCal_12m.gif

What more can one say when these photos say it all? What a difference 12 months can make! At the same time, you can clearly see it's the same bright-eyed little person. Happy Birthday Calvin!

This year's activities will be grouped into a new category called 'ONEderful.' (The Stowaway Diaries will remain linked form the top navigation.) In the coming weeks I plan to create a nice logo to go on the right, but as always, watch this space for the latest and greatest on our little... say it... toddler! From first haircuts to reportage on today's party at Calvin's creche and more. But for now, it's back to icing cake number two! (Hint: it's a ball.)

Pint-sized shopper

Gr_shop.gifOne of the best parts of birthday week is having Grammy come to stay. That means a week of treats from getting to celebrate a birthday together to shopping for new duds for spring.

Our yet-to-turn one year old is filling out his 12-18 month wardrobe, size 5.5 shoes and 2-3T socks! Yikes! Luckily our friends and family are very clued into how little ones grow, and we were thrilled to receive georgeous outfits in the perfect size. Thank you!

New Years

cal_fam_bd.gif
Today we celebrated Chinese New Year 4706 and Calvin's new year 1. With his Grammy in town, we enjoyed having friends over for nibbles and cake. Of course the star attraction was little Calvin.

cal_bd_cake.gifThe celebration at home was appropriately themed. His birthday falls on the Lantern Festival, the last day of the Chinese New Year, so Chinese lanterns graced the table and topped his home made cake. (Banana cake with cream cheese icing and raspberry filling.)

The pig pair we received at his baby shower last year was out in force; Calvin being born not only in the year of the pig/boar, but the once-in-500-years 'Year of the Golden Boar.'

And we literally topped him off with a little faux, red silk Chinese outfit complete with the fabulously embroidered lion hat, another shower gift intended to be worn on his first birthday celebration. (I remember thinking how enormous it was many months ago, and now it fits!)

Talking 'bout an evolution...

borders.gifWhat a difference standing upright can make. Experiencing Calvin's personal evolution from all fours to a homo erectus stance makes me feel like I've witnessed thousands of years of evolution in a matter of months!

The most stark contrast came yesterday, when we took an outing to the Borders book shop at Columbus Circle. He's been there many times -- from a babe in arms nursing in the feminist literature section, to tummy timing in the interior decor racks, to crawling in the less trafficked aisles filled with history tomes. (Not to mention our regular patronage of the baby changing station in the men's and women's bathrooms!)

Yesterday was quite different. Firstly, we travelled sans pram (stroller), backpack or other carrying device. Unless you count hips and arms. Once there, we shed our puffy outergarments and I let Calvin take charge. We went where he wanted to go; a follow the leader with Calvin in front.

What a ball. He loved being able to look at the book covers along the bottom shelves, the step stools, and the people sitting on the floor throughout the book store perusing the merchandise. Even more, he loved chasing after a friendly three-year-old boy who was running in and out the stacks, looping back around Calvin and stopping every so often to ask, "So are you coming?"

They examined boxes of (thankfully) firmly sealed Bionicles. Spanish flash cards. Test drove a box of alphabet book blocks. Mostly Calvin walked confidently this way and that, exercising his brain as much as his legs in trying to outsmart the much faster friend.

For me it was a revelation. Yes of course I was with him every step of the way, but being much more steady on his feet, it's less a case of anticipating a likely fall, to making sure he is playing constructively and safely. The world is so much wider and more understandable to him, as he experiences it from the same attitude, if not altitude, as most of us. (I think he has officially earned the upgrade from baby to toddler.)

Transition toddler

Our little Calvin is doing so well he's making us feel like pretty proud parents. Over the past two weeks he's been transitioning from the infant room to the ones room at his child care centre. More than a month in advance, he made the switch in under the two week time usually allotted. (Of course we're still trying to make the switch!)

Seeing him in his new environment is thrilling, and makes one truly appreciate the word 'engagement.' The little guy is thoroughly engaged with his very mobile fellow toddlers (and yes, he is now walking and even giving running a go!) and adores the different exploratory areas. There are wonderful adventures to be had every day, from turning a large box into a house, to making toy turtles bounce about by banging a drum that they are placed on, and art and movement classes too!

Another milestone looms in less than a week when we will spend the first time apart, an ocean and a continent apart. Calvin and dad will be holding down the fort while I travel to Uganda for work.

Pint-size perambulator

Calvin, just 11 months old, has been walking up a storm. This weekend he made a significant leap from crawling more than walking, to walking most of the time. It's still a shock to see this little head bobbing along much higher than I've been used to seeing it; and of hearing the rhythmic plop-plop-plop of his footsteps. Watch below (and crane your head at 90 degrees, apologies!) to see him still a little uncertain and unpracticed earlier this weekend. He's become so much more confident in mere days.

So far: so good

maaike5.jpgCalvin continues to be blissfully happy in his new class. Today he stayed there from 10 am onwards. He loves the mobility, the daily activities that range from drawing with crayons to a 'kinderdance' class; playing with mobile pals; sleeping in a barless cot under a cuddle soft teddy bear fleece blanket a friend of the family made for him.

He loves it so much he protests loudly when we have to get ready to leave for home in the evening. That's the best endorsement!

The class is a good mix of boys and girls and Calvin has friends on all sides. Here you see him with one of his favourite young friends. Her youngest sister was in the infant room with Calvin, and while he likes the sister, he adores F seen here. And she is endlessly kind and engaging, letting him explore her LeapPad toy and playing with him on the floor.

Moving on up...

Infants%20Dec%20and%20Jan%20018.jpgA small post about big changes for our little person. Today is day one of Calvin's transition to the next class up in his child care centre. Yup, at barely 11 months old, he's hit his milestones in advance and is heading up to the room for one's.

Normally the child transitioning from the infant's room (you can him and infant pals in this photo) to the one's room spend an hour on their first day. Our little guy was so enamoured of the new surroundings, the art activities and seeing his bigger buddies again that he stayed there until well after lunch!

Here's hoping that this is the start of a relatively smooth transition, but it's only day one of a two-week process.

Wall of fame

With all of our family a flight away -- varying between 1.5- to 18-hours-long -- it's vitally important for us to help our little guy keep the faces and names of his family close by. Equally important, that he knows and feels surrounded by their care and love.

In addition to sharing stories about them regulalry, and letting him bear-handle our telephones trying to figure out how his Bobo shrunk so small as to fit into the receiver, we also put together a 'wall of fame,' a wall of family, that keeps him company by his crib.

Often on recent mornings one of us will go in to his room and find Calvin contentedly pointing his finger at one image or another, babbling softly. Here's a video we captured of him doing just that this past weekend.

The little boy who almost can

Almost 11 months and almost walking, yet an avid almost climber. Calvin hasn't made any progress leaps in the walking department, but it's clear in a matter of weeks scenes like this will be in the past. At the playground today he climbed all over the 'jungle gym' with great confidence. Here he gets an 'A+' for effort in going after his new toy block depicting Asian art.

Nappius scarius

monkey.gifLast night was a scene of much consternation in our household when we discovered... only a single nappy. We installed it on a cute bottom and then made haste to deal with the lack.

In a different town with a different lifestyle, roving from store to store in hot pursuit of the right nappy wouldn't be remarkable, but when it involves leaping on the subway in the pouring rain and then taking a series of cabs from one Whole Foods outlet to the next to find size 4 365 nappies, one ends up feeling like.... somewhere between a slightly obsessive parent and that parental superhero known as NappyMan!, successful seeker of *the* nappy.

Happily, three stops and two bags of diapers later, success!

Little drummer boy

The little guy was fortunate to receive a generous moneygram from his grand uncle and aunt in South Africa and it wasn't too difficult to decide how to spend it. Part went into his savings account, and another went to an investment of a different kind: Calvin's music.

When shopping for a young percussionist -- for clearly that's what our pot, pan, cutlery and recycle banging boy is into right now -- there is only one stop in New York City. That locale is what I like to call music alley, just off Broadway on W48th Street. And on that street, we like Sam Ash.

This is like the epicentre of music. Divided among three stores now, theres the wood and wind store; the string store and... the percussion store. You can test out equipment (I highly recommend having a go on various drum sets); buy sheet music; or just gape in longing at the instruments (like the $6,000 Selmer Alto Sax like my dad used to have.)

Fortunately, when equipping a young percussionist, the price tags are much lower. We managed to get Calvin more than we bargained for -- his all time favourite Rythmix egg shakers in both the traditional egg shape, as well as an elephant, giraffe and rhino shape (each opening up all kinds of different sounds, weights and outlines for chewing on), as well as the piece de resistance... a tom drum!

I hope our neighbours do not think they've been transported into tribal lands somewhere, now that low tone bongs are emanating from our apartment. But it's well worth the beaming expression on our 'musician's' face. This video shows a snippet of the fun, thoughnot the best of the drumming by far. He does actually use the drumsticks the right way around and bangs the drum! Thanks Grand Uncle S and Grand Aunt M!

Family tree

It's Christmas Day here and we're enjoying as relaxed a day as we can (multiple pre-dawn wake ups not withstanding!) That's one of the little changes around here, including our elevated tree, seen here on top of our dining table surrounded by a sea of largess. We are very thankful and feel quite spoiled.

Not surprising, the largest pile of presents was for Calvin, who was equally enthralled with his board books, clothes and tambourine as we was with some of the packaging. A few moments from the day captured below:
Engrossed in the most excellent Yum Yum Dim Sum board book from his Aunt R, Uncle D and cousins C and P.
The 'in-progress' stocking... maybe it'll be completed this time next year?

Calvin wowed by a Night Before Christmas pop-up book
Getting rhythmic with his new tambourine
Reading his new French book about snow from Bobo.
neige_s.giftamb_s.gif

Today I also discovered that my brother and I are living a somewhat parallel life: he with Una, a new puppy addition to the family, and I with Calvin. They're almost the same "age" right now. Una wakes up and wakes everybody else up at 5am everyday; sometimes that's the case for you know who too. Una's arrival has also necessitated the placement of their Christmas tree and gifts at new altitudes. And of course, both are infused with seemingly boundless energy and fonts of pure joy.

Here's wishing you and yours a most joyful Christmas if it's a day you celebrate, and a most joyous day if it's simply an ordinary day on your calendar.

Happy holidays!

j_stairs.gifOn Friday, Calvin's creche held their holiday party. It was his second -- he'd already paid a party stop to the one thrown by my office, leaving behind a trail of smiles and shredded naan bread.

This time he got to explore the room for older toodlers, 12-18 months, and did he have fun! He loves going up the stairs, and these had a slide for going down, which he enjoyed trying out with Dad's assistance. They have a different style of tunnel that filled him with great delight, so much so that when it was time to go home, he was rather put out and objected loudly.

xmas_unccc.gifHe also got to open a present. A lovely board book about farm animals with fuzzy parts to feel. Together with an assortment of crackers and cookies, he had a holiday party to remember.

Best Dad in the World Day

dadbday_s.gifCalvin asked me to express the following on what some people have termed "his" blog.

"What's all this excitement about it being my 10-month milestone today?
Or about me being able to stand just fine by myself?
Or about me taking two, first independent step towards mom this morning?

The real excitement is that it's 'Best Dad in the World' day today.
We are celebrating his day, all day. Yay.
I worked all night on an extra-special, super, duper pooper of a present, pre-packaged in my nappy :0)

Happy Birth Day Daddy!!!!

Happier, healthier baby

cal_rhee2.jpgWe're happy to report that Calvin is much happier and healthier. After four days of crying, sweating, not eating much and sometimes ejecting that small amount, he is much more himself.

Calvin had Jay and I at his fingertips over the weekend, then got to spend Monday and Tuesday with me and Wednesday with Jay. Today dad's deft touch had the little chap back on his nap and meal schedule, and tuckered out for bed. Go dad!

So we've all survived Calvin's first illness (not counting colds and teething), and along with that first (and hopefully not to be repeated too often), we also got to mark another first this past weekend, before the poor guy fell ill. That was his first visit to the dentist.

Here he is perched comfortably on dad in Dr Rhee's Central Park facing rooms. (Really, the view is sublime and helps put even the most tense tooth patient like me, in a relaxed frame of mind!) That's before he discovered the dentist means someone peering and probing in your mouth.

At the moment, that's one of his least favourite things. But the doctor did manage to glimpse the budding pearly white, which now number six, three on top and three on the bottom, with more on the way.

Hot and heavy

thermometer.jpgThe best laid plans of blog postings and Christmas mail... have been set aside. That's because our poor Calvin has been waylaid by some sort of infection. Suffice to say we've spent the entire day tending to his heart-wrenching cries and hot forehead.

His temperature spikes have headed north of 105F / 41C and he surely thinks we're ill because he's had multiple lukewarm baths in a single day. We're armed with multiple bottles of ibuprofen, cold compresses, fresh towels, frequent clothing changes, more pedialyte (see 28 November posting) and lots of patience. His doctor says we should expect the infection to take a few days, so we're steeling ourselves for more of the same until mid-week.

Festive follies

tree_trim_s.JPGFor the past years, Jay and I have held a Christmas Tree trimming party. In the most recent years, we've battled a blizzard, a frozen tree, and a flooded tree, but this year was the most difficult battle of all -- the alternate tree.

This year's tree is somewhat different; comprised of amber twigs in a vase on our diningroom table. (There'll be more about the yet-to-be trimming of the "tree" in a later post.) The real milestone was the amount of enjoyment had hanging out with our friends. This year's party was a highpoint -- a most festive time with friends big and small, full of fun, new friendships and great cheese. (Tail ended after almost everyone had left, with a fever spike for Calvin, but which now seems to be under control... we hope.)

But what of the alternate tree? You see, I'd come rapidly to realize that 2007 was not going to be filled with the festive smell of spruce or balsam fir, the need to water aforementioned tree daily, and being able to amble down Ninth Avenue and glance up at our tree casting a cheerful, decorated glow out the windows.

The reason was simple: any kind of tree this year poses two main hazards. One, the in-house Everest appeal any such tree would present for our budding climber, who cannot yet walk but is steadily perfecting the art of climbing up the Turkish floor pillow on to the sofa; up us; and trying to balance on the giant tennis ball to get on top of the coffee table. It's safe to say he needs no further encouragement.

Two, one realizes that despite being a very child-centric holiday, Christmas ornaments seem to be designed with a single aspect of child safety in mind: to ensure the Emergency Room and pediatricians are kept busy dealing with the unfortunate results of combining small, fragile, colourful and sometimes electrified baubles with uncoordinated little people who like to put the aforementioned in their mouths.

Hopefully our haute (in elevation) tree this year will ensure the appropriate level of festive cheer for Calvin's first Christmas, while avoiding the downside.

Don't wait, rehydrate!

pedia.gifAbout a year ago, I consulted a number of baby preparatory tomes on essentials to have in the household. Of course I put a list together and that's how we're stocked with everything from gripe water and rubbing alcohol in our bathroom cabinet, to a pack of ready-to-use Pedialyte in our fridge.

For the uninitiated -- as I was a year ago -- Pedialyte is a flavoured liquid that is pre-mixed oral rehydration. This is the kind of stuff that they ought to make for student consumption, to minimize the after effects of what humourously goes by such euphamisms that include talking on the porcelain telephone, a technicolour yawn, pavement pizza, barking at the ants etc.

Without getting into too many stomach churning details (especially considering it's breakfast time for some of you), it was with great sorrow that my preparations proved to be foresightful. This is one occasion in which there is no joy in being right, and limited comfort in having stocks prepositioned.

Tonight I broke out one of those bottles and snapped off the top. You see, after having christened both his dad and I multiple times with a warm gush of partially digested goop, Calvin was feeling thirsty.

Right now he's settled, bedded down and sleeping peacefully... who knows for how long? So far, long enough to enter this post. Wish us luck!

Much to be thankful for

thank_table_s.gifLast Thursday was Thanksgiving, and on the occasion of this adopted holiday, I had a few moments to think about how this would become a family tradition. By tradition I mean something beyond the pilgrim story, and the ritual of the meal and dishes. (Although you can see we enjoyed that part too!)

This was C's first Thanksgiving and hopefully the first of many. This time around found us gathering family and friends around the table for a traditional feast. We, sans chef Jay, kicked off the day collecting a Little Pie Company pumpkin pie and watching the start of the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade pass through Times Square.

Jay meanwhile had done the shopping and cheffing extraordinaire: brining and roasting the turkey (and carving it just the way the NYTimes video suggested), cooking mashed potatoes, sweet Italian sausage stuffing and vegetarian stuffing, and green bean with Marcona almonds. My contribution? Bourbon sweet potato bake with peacan topping.

CS_parade_s.gifApart from the feast, it was both rewarding and humbling to take a day annually to consider the many reasons one has to be happy in one's life. Family. Friendship. Generosity. Health. Safety. Opportunity. Food ;0)

I also wondered; How will we forge this tradition with our unique family twist? Where will we end up celebrating the day in years to come?

The few moments for reflection came thanks to the extra pair of hands and huge heart we had staying with us for the week in the form of my mom-in-law. (Seen here with C at the parade.) She spoiled us all in ways big and small, and now that she's returned home, we find ourselves already missing her in a myriad of ways.

How to say "Uncle" in babytalk

Today Calvin had his nine-month check up. Though he often seems to weigh a few tons, or at least 25 pounds, we discovered he currently weighs in at 22 pounds 5 ounces. As for height, he's up there at the top of the charts at 31.5 inches tall. And as his doctor noted, "into everything!"

He's frequently mistaken for being older than he is, but as this short video clip from today shows, he's certainly holding his own with his older best buddy (who is just over a year.) In this clip, our little C comes off the champ, but I can assure you the spoils of daily wrestling-cum-rugby-tackle practice are equally split.

A beary nice Halloween

bear.gifAlthough the little guy is too small to appreciate Halloween, he still got to enjoy a dose of pumpkins, orange, costumes and some treats on his first Halloween. The teachers in his creche class organized a party complete with streamers and all manner of orange and black decorations; pumpkin plates handpainted by the infants; and with us parents, infants and adult-sized treats.

Calvin thoroughly enjoyed snacking his way through several Sesame Street crackers while partially costumed as a bear. (It was too hot and I a little tardy from a meeting to make it worthwhile wresling him into what would have been a matching brown, velour onesie.) Some of his fellow crechemates did Halloween proud though, with one as a little dog and the other as Piglet -- her older brother was in his classroom dressed as Eyeore!) It was the bear hat debut and sadly, we managed to lose it on the way home -- Calvin now being more excited and able to both dress and undress himself!

Portrait of a family

Last weekend I focused on one important 'To Do' that had been on my list for the past three months -- to shoot some family portraits. My mom was dispatched on a mission to a particular shop in the Garment District, and less that $3.00 later, we had our makeshift 'seamless' bacground.

With the aid of a shower rod and cutain, and one well positioned window (there's a reason why many guests have called it one of New York's bathrooms with the best view!), and the home studio was ready to go.

Representatives of three generations of my family were under one roof -- even the chair dates back to my paternal grandmother who dies before I was born. She custom ordered a series of these and they're still going strong! Take a look at the Flickr photoalbum by clicking here to see the results.

Souks in the city

One of the things I love about my Manhattan neighbourhood, Hell's Kitchen, is its strong sense of self and its vibrant community. Take the kid's Halloween Parade and neighbourhood party on Ninth Avenue and 47/48th street this weekend; the community garden barbeque held earlier this summer; the annual block garage sale on 43rd street; and the bi-annual toy and clothing exchange.

The latter never entered my consciousness until, of course, the organizing principle became relevant. This Sunday marks the second one I've attended and volunteered for. Think bazaar for babies and children, a medley of goods crammed onto rows of those institutional folding tables that grace so many church halls across the globe.

During trading hours you could easily imagine yourself in a one-room, western version of Istanbul's Kapali Carsi -- sans traders but with goods aplenty. Chaos appears to reign, but commerce manages to be conducted.

Living in close quarters, the sale makes both dollars and sense for everyone who participates -- who has the space to keep something that isn't useful? Add to it environmental consciousness and a communual-friendly attitude and you have a community of parents who are only too happy to sell their gently used goods and acquire others they need.

The sale has been an institution in the neighbourhood for more than 20 years, and going along with that, there are sellers who are in hot demand. Like "G", who apparently has a selection of the best toys for boys; and "C", who takes such good care of items that they return to the exchange for another cycle of usefulness.

If "it takes a village" to raise a child, then we've got a good start here in Hells' Kitchen!

A missing piece

cal_bobo_s.gifAs the days of this week pass one by one, we can't believe that three months with grandma have passed. It barely seems possible that Calvin's Bobo could have been here for a month, let alone three, and as her departure stares us in the face, we're making the most of every moment.

Over the past week we've been to see the astoundingly excellent production of Madame Butterfly at The Metropolitan Opera, had tea at a favoured haunt -- Alice's Teacup -- on the Upper West Side, and made our way from the mysteries of Mythical Creatures to the marvels of modern astrophysics and entomology at the American Museum of Natural History. (I'd been anticipating seeing the Mystical Creatures exhibit with my mom since I first got wind of it at the start of the year.)

We also made sure to tackle another item on my must do list this weekend -- a family portrait session. Some black fabric from the Garment District (thanks to mom for hunting it down), a shower rod, bathroom rearrangement and, voila, studio 360, is born. This is one of my favourites from today's photo session.

One can't help protesting, "it's too soon!" It also makes me aware of how lethargy, routine and a little procrastination can lull one into thinking you can always do "it" (whatever that might be) next weekend. Time for carpe diem.

Where have we been?

cal_tower_s.gifAnd why's it been so silent for the past fortnight? Have we been away? Check. Have we been techonogically challenged? Check. Have we been swamped with priorities other than updating our blog? Check.Too busy for even a photo? Nah.

A clue to there whereabouts of Calvin and I in recent weeks lies in this photo. Here you see one of the places we've been, an old convent, Faliezustersklooster, built 1647. Here Calvin had fun on an unusually sunny autumn day, romping rapidlu around the lawn and in hot and determined pursuit of a giant earthworm (about a foot long!)

More of our adventure to be revealed in the coming days as we get over our jetlag and into a more sleep condicive routine. Watch this space!

Pint-sized Picasso

Foam paint is fun! In case you hadn't guessed. It's particularly fun the first time you get to paint anything. Imagine the squishy sensation of a sticky colourful substance on your hands... that isn't your food. Even better, there are many colours, and you're encouraged to spread them around as you like on a large piece of paper. Bingo!

cal_paint_s.gif

One of the lovely things about Calvin's creche is that the team will document your child's activities. Here's our little one literally trying his hand with a dab of blue and a hint of rose. We have the mini-masterpiece. It would be quite fun to frame with these photos of him in action.

Apparently he was quite focused on the experience of the texture of the paint, as well as the results of him moving his hands about and seeing the picture take shape.

On the move!

It's official. After a week of crawling a few paces without realizing it, Calvin has mastered mobility on all fours and nothing and no one is safe.

Calvin celebrated his seven month mark by giving me a happy surprise. I plopped him off on the carpet in his room and was in the bathroom running is bath. I'd been there barely a few minutes and was turning to put a towel down when I came face to face with Calvin, right behind me, looking very pleased with himself as he unpacked his nappies (diapers) from where they were stored.

Since then there's been little stopping him. He's thrilled to be under his own steam, to be able to go where he chooses without assistance. Overnight we implemented our baby proofing operation, resulting in almost no adult in the household being able to open the cupboards, get to the garbage, use the stove or open the toilet!

Catch the little guy in pursuit of one of his favourite toys, below.

Birthday boy

cal.gifNo. You're not wrong. it's many months yet before the little guy celebrate's his first birthday. But we can hardly keep up with his social calendar of birthday parties.

One can have little doubt about how couples kept themselves amused in the depths of winter in 2005, because this week Calvin will be attending not one, but two birthday parties, his third and fourth!

By the seond party he had already wised up to the drill. An attractively laid tot-sized table, celebratory serviettes (that's napkins to y'all), and paper plates... most of them filled with a colourful and healthy mix of low sugar, cheerios-styled coloured cereal and sliced fruit. That is, except for his plate and those of one or two others who haven't yet started on those sorts of solid food a.k.a. finger food.

He was enchanted by the first party. The singing, the table, the photos. He played cheerfully with his empty plate, folding it and gnawing on it. He flapped his serviette in the air. Then he tried to sample his neighbours' fare.

After some shifting of plates out of his reach, he sat back and contemplated the setup. Then he calming leaned forward, grabbed the table cloth, and pulled it steadily so that every plate on the table began a slow and steady progression toward him. A-ha!

Of course his attempts were stymied. But come party number two, our lad was ready. No sooner were his fellow guests seated and a few plates of cookies and cupcakes placed in the centre of the table, then he lunged! In one fell swoop Calvin secured the largest frosted cookie in the pile. He smooshed it into his face, mouth agape.

Sadly his attempts at becoming one with the cookie -- intended for adult consumption, it must be noted -- were foiled yet again. The only reward for his admirable efforts were that he got to 'wear' frosting for the rest of the celebration.

So who knows what to expect this week, where Wednesday holds a party for one friend and Saturday another? No doubt our young 'un has been plotting his next move. We'll keep you posted.

Days like this...

It's what some sources dub the 'golden age' of infancy -- your baby can sit unsupported, select toys and amuse themselves, but they can't yet crawl! i.e. independently get into mischief. Our little C, sporting his ever more visible duo of dentes, is at just this stage. Yesterday morning I shot a short video snippet of him trying to work out how to crawl. Just how much longer it will be before he works it out is anyone's guess, but it can't be much longer.

He has already worked out numerous yoga moves that would make less flexible folk wince and then wonder in envy. Holding plank pose isn't that difficult then? So that's why it's called happy baby! How many times can you alternate between down dog and chattaranga? And more cardio kickstarting for us, he has also worked out how to claw his way up to standing against our sofa.

T%26C_sleep_B%26W_s.gifThat's what makes moments like this one, all the more precious :0)
To paraphrase Van Morrison, here's to more days like this:
When you don't need to worry, there'll be days like this
When no ones in a hurry, there'll be days like this
When everything falls into place like the flick of a switch
Oh my mama told me there'll be days like this

Tales from the heartland

cousins_s.gifThere's a reason why they call middle America the heartland. And it has more than a little to do with the outpouring of warmth, support and welcome that is extended by those who call this area of the country 'Home.'

We spent this Labour Day weekend in Ohio with the other half of Calvin's family and many family friends. It was four days of highlights, just a few of which I'll share here. For one, Calvin got to meet his cousins for the very first time. He's lucky guy, because they are gentle and fun playmates, enjoying getting him to laugh and encouraging his attempts to crawl. Jay set up this wonderful image, it is, as they say, "a keeper." (Jay has put together an online photo album of our visit. Click here to see the images.)

fish_s.gifThis one on the right was not a keeper, though. I mean the tiny blue gill fish that Calvin's Pop caught. This was one of quite a few, which were all returned to sender in perfect working order into the pond in the background.

But not before a certain curious little boy got to experience the slick, sticky, fishiness. Where some infants are scared, our little one was only extremely curious. And yes, he tried to taste the sticky residue on his hands!

horses_s.gifSpeaking of curious, Calvin was more than mildly so about the dozens of spectacular trotting racehourses we got to see at a friend's family farm. These large creatures didn't daunt the little guy at all, although we made sure his little hands didn't get into harm's way. He took in the farrier, stables and grooming with great interest. (And if you're wondering how to tame your mane similarly, try giving the horse in your life a regular vaccuming. No joke.)

grammy_study_s.gifAnd what better way to end each day than a home away from home? That would be Grammy's home, complete with a crib and accoutrements, fun toys and a throne-like high chair. It was a haven for the little guy, his folks and Bobo too, and spacious enough that we all got t have our own bedrooms without displacing a soul. Wow. Calvin was thrilled with a new discovery -- wall-to-wall carpeting. It makes learning to crawl and sit up a much more pleasant experience.

Swimming in action

I finally got to uploading and linking this clip of our littlest swimmer at the pool a block away. He's thoroughly enjoying the water and the big pool, especially in his new spring suit. Unfortunately he only got to take one swim this Labour Day weekend in Ohio, despite perfect, hot and sunny conditions. But what we lacked in quantity, we made up in quality: the little guy took his longest swim yet and enjoyed playing at being a mini-dolphin.

In the swim

swim.gifWith the weather hot and humid, it's perfect for the pool. Throughout the summer I've taken Calvin to my gym to literally test the waters. It was actually after one of these pool runs that he decided he liked his bath. Except for one occasion, he has always been in the little kiddie pool, until now.

This most recent trip, clad in a swimming outfit that was Riviera-ready (thank you LN team!), and with extra hands in the form of Dad and Bobo, I decided it was time to try the big pool again. The extra hands were most welcome and needed -- a pair to help hold and safely hand in the little guy to me once I got into the shallow end (which is deeper than the nine inches depicted in the photo!) and another pair to document the moments. (Bobo played photographer and wittily captured us with the 'nine inches' of the 'three feet and nine inches' depth marker in the foreground.)

Calvin loved it. Much more confident with both the locale and the element, he splashed and kicked vigorously for a whole 15 minutes (which, when you're not yet six months old, is pretty good!)

This weekend is swelter weather again, so I hope to be leading a pool expedition tomorrow. this time we have a spring suit-styled costume for him, as this will help keep him warmer in the water, and hopefully up the fun factor even more.
