One of the highlights of our trip was a stay at Amakhala game reserve in the Eastern Cape. Calvin got to go on his very first game drive and was certainly very lucky in seeing some of Africa’s Big 5. That is, had he not been asleep for part of it!
As you see above, G’s driving made smooth sailing of the off road byways, as did being snuggled against dad’s chest. I had planned to snap the images to show Calvin later, as in, “Look, here you are with a [fill in the name of the relevant animal]”
In this example, that would be rhino. Because there was a family of them, a massive bull, female and a calf. You can see the cow and calf that are in the background of the photo above, more clearly below.
Reviewing the images taken both on the reserve and a few weeks later on a farm, the effect was not what I had in mind. I pictured an in focus Calvin with an in focus and clearly recognizable beastie. Instead most of the photos depict a portion of Calvin’s beige hat in the bottom left, and a diminutive animal somewhere in the rest of the frame! Photoshop may be required.
